Days of the week in Spanish
All seven days from lunes to domingo, with audio, the three rules that catch beginners out — lowercase spelling, the article instead of a preposition, and the invariable plurals — plus the phrases you actually need to make plans. Tap any speaker to hear it.
The three rules
- No capital letters. Write lunes, not "Lunes" — only at the start of a sentence.
- Use the article, not en. el lunes = on Monday, los lunes = on Mondays. En lunes is wrong.
- Five days never change in the plural. los lunes, los martes… los viernes; only sábados and domingos add an -s.
The seven days, in order
The Spanish week starts on lunes — calendars put domingo last. All days are masculine: el lunes.
- lunes — MondayFrom Latin dies Lunae, 'day of the Moon' (la luna).
- martes — TuesdayDay of Mars (Marte).
- miércoles — WednesdayDay of Mercury (Mercurio) — note the accent.
- jueves — ThursdayDay of Jupiter (Júpiter).
- viernes — FridayDay of Venus.
- sábado — SaturdayFrom Hebrew shabbat — accent on the first syllable.
- domingo — SundayFrom dies Dominicus, 'the Lord's day'.
Pronunciation notes
- miércoles — stress the mier, and don't forget the written accent.
- jueves — the j is a throaty h: HWEH-behs.
- sábado — stress falls on the first syllable: SAH-bah-doh.
- The final -s of lunes, martes, viernes is often softened to an h sound in the Caribbean and southern Spain.
"On Monday" vs "on Mondays"
After ser you drop the article: Hoy es lunes (not es el lunes). And to say "from Monday to Friday" no articles are used at all: de lunes a viernes.
