Months in Spanish

All twelve months from enero to diciembre, with audio, the spelling and preposition rules beginners get wrong, how to write a date in Spanish, and the seasons. Tap any speaker to hear it.

The three rules

  1. No capital letters. Write enero, not "Enero" — only at the start of a sentence.
  2. Use en for a whole month. en marzo = in March. For a date use el 3 de marzo. El marzo is wrong.
  3. All months are masculine. un enero frío, el próximo agosto.

The twelve months, in order

Only septiembre, octubre, noviembre and diciembre keep an obvious English shape — the rest are worth hearing before you say them.

  • eneroJanuaryFrom Ianuarius, the month of Janus. Say eh-NEH-roh.
  • febreroFebruaryTwo r-sounds to keep apart: feh-BREH-roh.
  • marzoMarchMonth of Mars — the z is a soft s in Latin America.
  • abrilAprilStress the last syllable: ah-BREEL.
  • mayoMaySame root as English May; the y sounds like an English y.
  • junioJuneThe j is a throaty h: HOO-nyoh.
  • julioJulyAlmost the twin of junio: HOO-lyoh.
  • agostoAugustNo h and no u sound at the start: ah-GOS-toh.
  • septiembreSeptemberAlso written setiembre in parts of Latin America.
  • octubreOctoberNote the b, not a v: ok-TOO-breh.
  • noviembreNovemberThe v sounds close to a soft b.
  • diciembreDecemberThe c before i is a soft s (or th in Spain).

How to write and say dates

el 5 de mayo de 2026
Day, then de, then the month, then de and the year. No ordinal endings — el 5, never "el 5º".
el 1 de enero / el primero de enero
The first of the month is the one exception: Spain says el uno, most of Latin America el primero.
5/5/2026
Numerals run day/month/year, so 3/4 is 3 April — not 4 March.
en marzo · a principios de marzo · a finales de marzo
In March · in early March · at the end of March.

Months and the seasons

These are the northern-hemisphere months; in Argentina, Chile or Peru the seasons are flipped, so julio is winter.

  • la primaveraspringmarzo – mayo
