Ir conjugation in Spanish
ir — to go · participle ido · gerund yendo
Ir means “to go”, and it is the engine behind the most useful beginner future tense in Spanish: ir a + infinitive (voy a estudiar = I'm going to study). Its forms come from three different Latin verbs, which is why they look nothing like the infinitive.
Tables show Mexican Spanish: ustedes is the plural "you" (same forms as ellos/ellas). In Spain you'll also hear vosotros — see the variants guide for those forms.

How to use ir
The near future: ir a + infinitive
Conjugate ir in the present and add a plus an infinitive: voy a comer, vas a salir, vamos a viajar. Beginners can express almost any future plan this way before learning the future tense.
Vamos as 'let's'
Vamos literally means “we go”, but it is also the everyday way of saying “let's go” or “let's…”: ¡Vamos! / Vamos a empezar.
Preterite overlap with ser
Ir and ser share the preterite forms fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. If a place follows (fui a la playa), it is ir.
ir conjugation FAQ
How do you conjugate ir in the present tense?
Voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van.
How do you say 'going to' in Spanish?
Use ir a + infinitive: voy a estudiar (I'm going to study), van a comer (they're going to eat).
Why is the preterite of ir the same as ser?
Both verbs borrowed the same Latin preterite forms, so fui can mean “I went” or “I was” depending on context.
